The below knee sleeve holds the prosthesis firmly on your limb eliminating pistoning during swing phase of walking.
Prosthetic suspension occurs secondary to a negative pressure during swing phase and the longitudinal tension in
the sleeve itself. To function, the BK sleeve must terminate above the stump socks to contact the skin.
BK Suspension Sleeves are generally very efficient at suspending or holding your prosthesis on. BK Sleeves can be
used as a primary or auxiliary suspension.
How BK versus Gel/Silicone Sleeves Work
 | Neoprene or textile type bk sleeves work using friction. | |
| Silicone/Gel type sleeves (silicone, urethane or others) work using friction and by also creating an airtight seal | |
| between your thigh skin and the top of your prosthesis. |
- 1. Sleeves function best when pulled as high as possible over your stump socks on your thigh. This allows the
sleeve to “cling” and use every available skin surface area for friction to do its job.
2. Skin irritations, usually in the form of a rash, can occur when the bk sleeve is not regularly washed.

- 1. All sleeves will restrict knee bending to some extent. Your ability to flex your knee will improve as the knee
sleeve “relaxes” with use.
2. Care should be taken to avoid kneeling on the sleeve or other activities that would damage the sleeve and
